Stair safety - Find out more about Tommy, who suffers from osteoarthritis and uses the TOPRO Step

The topic of stair safety and the TOPRO Step stair climbing aid. Tommy Jørdal holds on to the handle of the TOPRO Step and pushes himself forward with the help of the handle. Tommy Jørdal feels completely safe and can now finally climb the stairs at home again - without any help from others. (This is a translation based on an article by Verena Døsvik, originally published in the magazine 70+, 2017).

Tommy Jørdal is someone who has led a very active life so far, preferring to be out in the woods and wilderness with his giant schnauzers.

"Having dogs is undoubtedly a lifestyle in itself and definitely makes it easier to get out and about."

A few years ago, however, Tommy developed osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis). This form of osteoarthritis is one of the most common signs of joint wear and tear. As a result, his walks became shorter and shorter and climbing stairs within his four walls became more and more difficult. However, thanks to the TOPRO Step stair climber, climbing stairs has become easier for him again and he can now climb stairs safely.

Stair safety

Before installing the TOPRO Step at home, Tommy was hesitant when going down the stairs from the second floor. He didn't feel like he had anything to hold onto and therefore felt unsafe and uncomfortable in his own home. It was his home help who had recommended that he test and apply for the TOPRO Step.

TOPRO Step is an aid for stairs that consists of a handle that you push in front of you when climbing stairs and that provides the necessary safety and support thanks to its patented braking mechanism.

"The Teppenhilfe is so ingenious and simple and allows me to live at home for longer," says Tommy. "I'm very impressed with the students who came up with this idea and developed it into such a great aid."

The user-friendliness of the stair climber was particularly important to Halvor Wold and the other product developers at AssiTech. "With this product, we have no electronics or buttons that you have to know how to use. The aid works fully mechanically and is very easy to use," explains Halvor.

Stair safety - TOPRO Step

The TOPRO Step stair climber is manufactured in Trondheim (Norway) and more than 100 people in Norway alone have now installed the aid at home.

"We looked very closely at the issue of falls on stairs and stair safety at the university. The existing solution at the time was to install a stairlift, which in turn makes people so passive that their walking function either deteriorates or at least doesn't improve."

From this problem, they developed the idea for the TOPRO Step. Anyone who needs the stair climbing aid can contact us or our sales partners to arrange an appointment for advice and a trial run.

Falls

Falling is one of the most common causes of accidents. Every year, more than 600,000 people fall only in Germany alone. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 12,867 people died as a result of a fall in 2015 in Germany. Especially as people get older, they often suffer serious injuries.

The German Medical Association of North Rhine estimates that around 80 percent of all over-80s and around 30 percent of all over-65s fall in their own homes every year.

Falling down stairs - Barrier-free stairs and barrier-free living

A large proportion of falls occur on stairs and these falls in particular can have serious consequences. In 2013, there were around 4000 deaths due to falls on the stairs. In the case of accidents on the stairs, the accident victim is often to blame, as it is not uncommon for a fall to occur due to a lack of safety awareness or climbing the stairs too hastily.

Fall prevention on the stairs

So far, no stair climbing aid has been found that mobilizes the person concerned and at the same time provides the necessary safety and support for daily stair climbing.

Developed in Norway, the innovative TOPRO Step stair climber now offers the necessary support and safety that people need when climbing stairs. The TOPRO Step stair climber is a more cost-effective alternative to a stairlift and mobilizes the user instead of passivating them. This allows the user to actively practice climbing stairs and increase their gait safety on stairs.

This ensures safer stair climbing even outside the home and can help prevent future falls. The TOPRO Step can be installed quickly, as neither permits nor electrical connections are required. The system is module-based and can be installed on almost all types of stairs.

Please contact your insurance company for more information.

Stair falls should not be taken lightly. Make your stairs safe and use aids to secure them. Another important point for people with gait insecurity is to continue to maintain and develop their mobility and strength in order to ensure and train gait safety.
