After three months of training at the rehabilitation center, Jan Erik was able to start training on the stairs again. However, this was not as easy as before and he still had great difficulty climbing stairs. Jan Erik had to hold on to the banister because he was afraid of falling again. His balance is no longer what it used to be, as some of his neck and spinal cord injuries will never fully heal.
During his stay on the neurology ward at St. Olav Hospital in Trondheim, his occupational therapist recommended the TOPRO Step stair climber. From his living room, he and his wife have a wonderful view of Lake Bothnia, where he used to go fishing.

The process of getting the TOPRO Step stair climber was relatively straightforward. He spoke to the occupational therapist in his home municipality and together they tried to get the cost of the TOPRO Step stair climber covered by the Norwegian Central Office for Assistive Products.

Jan Erik says that he is still unsteady on his feet. The physiotherapist encourages him to walk without holding on to anything - this encourages him to constantly improve and gain more control over his body.
A stairlift was out of the question for us. I was able to hold on to the banister with both hands and after just 3-4 months of rehabilitation I was able to go up and down the stairs. When the TOPRO Step stair climbing aid was installed in our home, our house suddenly became accessible to me again.
"I no longer had to walk sideways up the stairs, I could take things up and down the stairs with me and I had physical protection in case I fell again. Being able to climb the stairs is great for my body and now I can do it and be safe."
Jan Erik's experience after the accident is certainly not a sprint, but a marathon, as he describes it himself. You have to push yourself and train properly to make progress. Jan Erik is now aiming to return to work as a teacher in an 80% job about a year after the accident.
